Twenty years ago, the LegalPoint journey began. At that time, I was an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, launching several companies. As the CEO of one of these ventures, I was featured in Fortune Magazine and Business Week, and in 1991 I ranked among the top 125 highest-paid business executives in the Valley—with Apple’s John Scully topping the list. While this personal background is part of the LegalPoint story, it’s just the beginning.
Early in my career, whenever I had questions about common business agreements, I’d call a lawyer. I quickly noticed that my questions were often identical, and the lawyers’ answers almost invariably followed the same pattern. This consistency inspired me to record those responses and link them to specific agreements—unwittingly laying the foundation for what would evolve into LegalPoint’s documents with embedded guidance. I soon realized that these instructions and professional tips were powerful tools in negotiating deals because, in business, knowledge truly is power.
New business owners also know that legal expenses can be daunting. For instance, a startup typically needs a confidentiality agreement. I observed that, despite minor variations, most law firms produced nearly identical documents, yet each version cost between $1,500 and $2,500 to draft. This was only one of many agreements that new companies require.
With the help of some friends, I launched a company to bring the agreement explanation library concept to life. We called it LegalPoint. The company expanded its offerings by identifying additional legal documents for both business and personal use, and by engaging lawyers and business professionals to create detailed, easy-to-understand explanations for each form.
Our legal documents eventually reached a wide audience through prominent retail channels. The image on the left is a photo of the actual box that was sold under the Kiplinger brand with the software on a CD inside the box. LegalPoint was sold under trusted names such as Kiplinger Home & Business Attorney and Kiplinger Home Legal Adviser, and we even licensed a version to Intuit, which included LegalPoint Pro documents with QuickBooks Accounting Pro. More than 2 million copies were sold at retail, and not once did we face litigation related to the use of LegalPoint. This impeccable record stands as a testament to the quality of our product and the expertise of the professionals behind our proprietary explanation library.
Now, you too can benefit from years of experience, testing, and expert guidance. The LegalPoint explanation library is available to you.
